The Madras High Court has restrained the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) from publishing the list of selected candidates for its Group I service for 2007-08 and 2008-09 until December 10. In his interim order asking the TNPSC not to publish the selection list, Justice V Dhanapalan ordered notice returnable in one week to the commission on a writ petition from a candidate whose name figured in the reserve list' for 2006-07. The court posted the matter for hearing on December 9.

K Velusamy of Perundurai in Erode district, the petitioner, contended that he was a candidate for the Group I service for 2006-07. There were 172 posts meant to be filled in that year's recruitment. His name figured in the 25% reserve list, which was maintained to fill up vacancies in case selected candidates did not accept the appointment due to some reason. He ought to have been appointed in such a vacancy, as many candidates selected in that year's recruitment had not joined service within the stipulated time.
